We all think about the past. Many of us hold on to aspects of the past. Some of those things are worth remembering, some are not. Try telling your mind not to think about the things that aren’t worth recalling and on a good day it will behave, on a difficult one it won’t. Particularly if you haven’t been able to resolve whatever it is in your mind.
It’s all very human and understandable, but we also need a course correction. Ideas that have helped me:
- If you walk forwards looking backwards you’re likely to have an accident. In this case you could accidentally create the same thing. Or find yourself somewhere you didn’t want to be, again.
- The same applies to wanting a better future, if you’re looking at and thinking about what went wrong then you’re creating a future based on that vibration. Which is why so many people have a romantic ‘type’ and lots of failed relationships. That’s just one example.
- The old saying is that we only have the now. If we’re going to be optimistic that’s not a great way to look at things. If you live only in the now then you won’t necessarily be making decisions that will work later in life. One example here, you decide not to bother with a job, the world is your oyster. Then you meet the love of your life, want to move in together, and you have no money. As such what you think about and bring about in the now is going to affect you going forward.
- Don’t live in the future either, if you do that you won’t create in the now you will wait for the future to arrive. Not having laid the groundwork for your dreams makes it less likely that you will achieve them. You can be very lucky in life, but by the same token if you want to be a millionaire you at least have to buy a lottery ticket, or get a good career together, or start a business. You have to plan and act in the now.
- Finally, instead of thinking about the past, learn the lessons by all means but use them to move forward more effectively. Instead of thinking about the now, be active in the now. Instead of thinking about the future and trying to work out what you want, focus on being happy as often as you can. Focus on the things that make you happy. These are the things that will likely be successful for you in all areas of your life.
Happiness is much underrated, people scoff at the very idea that happiness is possible, you don’t need that kind of trash talk in your life. Happiness is health, wealth, and…well…happiness. What more could you possibly want or need?
You may even discover, if you find true happiness, that you need a lot less than you thought you did to have a really good life.
