My phone

What technology would you be better off without, why?

Practicality

Technology is a double-edged sword. My phone is brilliant and I love it, but one of our hands wasn’t intended to permanently grip a phone.

Due to a period of depression I’ve spent too much of the last 3 years doing this and I can feel the physical effects. I can’t quite believe it.

I’d far rather compute on a computer, and only use a phone for calls and photography.

The games I play now are repetitive and mundane. Computer games are far better.

Emotionally

I find technology stressful. It’s bought too many negatives into my home.

Again, I’m not completely negative, there is good and bad in everything, but from potential hacking, through some of the worst websites to navigate – DPD being one of them – to the updates that throw everything out, it’s all more stress than could possibly interest me.

Social media used to be amazing, but I’ve been insulted by strangers more times in the last five years than the entire 63 years prior. It’s toxic now.

Financial

To bring your work to anyone’s attention on social media can cost a fortune unless you’re a very canny marketer, I don’t have a clue.

Apps cost a ridiculous amount per year and you’re not allowed to buy them outright. instead it’s an ongoing monthly or yearly cost.

The temptation to gamble must be huge when it’s so readily available on your phone; and the temptation to shop is easily grasped in one hand while one finger is all that’s needed to seriously damage your bank account.

When you had to go and switch a computer on it gave you cooling down time.

Still a techno-geek though

An image I created with AI that means a lot to me

I do love technology despite all this, I just wish it was less readily available, less abused, and the trolls would go and live in a cave where trolls are supposed to live. One without a WiFi connection.

I do love my phone, I just wish it were less useful and flexible. Did a little less. But then it’s not the phone’s fault that we’re being pushed this way by things being made easier on a phone than a computer. Not helping us just cornering the market.

You need two factor authentication nowadays which often means a code sent to your phone, so you need one to access websites on your PC.

It’s a lot to deal with on top of the state of the world. It brings trolls and despots right into your home, and it also brings in friends and connections.

What a confusing world it is at times with no clear emotional reaction available. Love your phone, hate your phone, love to hate your phone, and know you’d be lost without it. Play a lot of useless games because secretly you’re hooked, but also listen to your favourite music any time anywhere.

Yes I hate to love my phone, but I do. Off to give it a cuddle and tuck it in for the night.

Best love – from my phone and I

I'm a writer, public speaker, medium, and spiritual thinker. I suffered from acute anxiety from the age of 16 until I was well into my 50s, when I finally found methods that helped me to put it behind me. My struggles led to me exploring life through poetry, then plays, and over a 15 year period I made notes for a self help book which I published in 2015. Details on the book page. Although I am a psychic medium and loved the work, it didn’t feel right for me. It was an utter privilege, but my path was the exploration of what it means to be spirit in the real world and how we can make practical use of those abilities. Nowadays I write, blog, and teach soul-centred living, which is a gentle way of undoing past programming and connecting to your essential self, or soul. If you’re interested email me and we can chat. No pressure, it’s right for you or it’s not and you will know. The groups meet on line so no going out on cold, wet, winter’s evenings. On a personal note, I’m based in the UK. Married with five cats, no children, and four grandchildren, thanks to our inherited daughter, who has gifted us four beautiful little people that bring us such joy. Hope you enjoy the blogs. Deb xx
