This is from the section Getting Ready to Change. The premise of the book is that it’s better to identify what’s wrong rather than rushing in where angels fear to tread, and randomly attacking different aspects of your life.
If you want to create true change – focus.
It reminds us that the only real change comes from within, and it must involve changing your thoughts and attitude in a real way, rather than thinking of change as a purely intellectual concept.
The danger lies in becoming stuck in the thinking stage.
Questions to consider:
- Are you prepared to change? It’s not a silly question, because the natural answer is “of course”, but what’s the real gut-level, heart centred answer? You need to know what you really feel.
- Do you believe that changing the person you are is possible?
- Do you realise that the only person you can change is you, and that the world will respond to those changes.
These are the three main things I came up with in the book. The third one is the most important, because we often think of external change: a better job; more money; new house; new relationship. You get the drift. But the old you will be unlikely to do things sufficiently differently to bring about real, lasting change. Nor will becoming stuck in that thinking stage, because it makes change theoretical and not real, and the change won’t translate into your everyday life and the way you manage it.
As to being ready for change, I said in the book that I don’t feel anyone is really ready, but when you’re unhappy there is only one way forward, action. But thoughtful, targeted action is by far the most powerful.

This is an image I asked AI to create, I wondered what it would come up with, and as expected it was everything external.
However, the ‘more self care’ section would fit very nicely with the idea of caring enough about yourself to create the right change. Especially reviewing the mistakes of the past, without judgement, to work out what thoughts and behaviours you need to work on so that you make different choices and decisions.
It is all about you, you are the master and commander of your own life, and the most important part of the process of change, is to recognise that you are the power in your life.
Hope this helps
