I don’t know about you but I’m not flexible, so folding myself into pretzel position is not only improbable, but I’d be too uncomfortable to relax.
Many people have strategies for meditation, prepare a sacred space, use specific music, and so on. This can feel overwhelming to beginners, and a simpler approach can help.
Always play beautiful music if you wish, preferably without lyrics. If you don’t know what to play look up music at 111hz on YouTube. It’s the rate of vibration of the planet and it will match your vibe to the Earth.
It’s surprisingly effective. A friend completely mislaid her short temper when at work just by playing it quietly in the background whilst working.
The meditation is important
Sit comfortably – you can finesse your sitting position later.
Breathe naturally. You can work on the breathing once you’re used to meditating.
Try a guided meditation. YouTube has hundreds.
If you enjoy fitness you can do a walking meditation.
Meditating is basically relaxation that has a profound positive effect on the body. If you find any activity relaxing and it clears your mind, it’s good meditation practice. A friend used to meditate while she cleaned her oven. Odd but true.
Taking care of the mind and resting it is so important, whatever works for you to get you started is great. Go with it. I suggest that you…
Start with visualisation
My guide describes visualisation as a deliberate intent to focus the mind positively and healthily. Whereas meditation is about calming and clearing the mind.
If you’re unused to these practices you may find visualisation easier at first. In other words ‘imagine’.
The three techniques below are visualisations, with something simple to focus your mind on that is easily imagined.
As you do them imagine seeing the white light, the feeling of sitting on a sandy beach in as much detail as you can, or what space might look and feel like. Try to really see the images and feel the experience. You can always find images for inspiration.
Try these techniques
White light: Sit comfortably. Relax and slow your breathing. Allow your eyes to close naturally. Place your hands over your heart.
Imagine a white light in the heart area. As you breathe out it expands. Do that until your entire body is filled with white light. Then expand the light out until you’re surrounded by that light. Then visualise golden light flowing around the edges of that light until you’re sealed in a golden bubble. You’re now protected. Open your eyes when you’re ready.
This one is about self-empowerment. Feeling your own strength. Becoming centred in the self.
The Waves: Sit comfortably and breathe as before. Imagine that you’re sitting on a beach and the waves are coming in gently kissing your toes. As you breathe in the sea comes in, as you breathe out the sea goes out. Visualise the waves coming over your feet and retreating, then up to your ankles, and retreating. With each incoming wave the sea moves up your body until for a brief moment as the wave comes in, you’re under water (but perfectly safe). Then see the sea flow back out again slowly, and open your eyes.
This is pure relaxation.
Space: This is a cleansing meditation. Set up as before. Imagine that you’re looking at yourself sitting on a very comfortable recliner in space. As you look at yourself you see that your feet are disappearing and being replaced by stars. Gradually the stars move up your body until you can only see a golden outline around your body. The rest is stars. You’re now part of the quantum field. As you sit there the energy goes through you one quantum wave at a time. After the fourth wave you see that your body starts returning to normal, when the stars are gone and you can see yourself as you always do, open your eyes.
This last one is for when you feel out of sorts in any way. Don’t focus on the issue, just focus on disappearing into stars, floating comfortably in the Quantum field, and feeling cleansed and free.
Give yourself time
This practice takes time to master. You can’t visualise, don’t worry just pretend you can. You can’t feel the sea…ditto.
It’s too easy to take yourself out of a very healthy practice because you think you can’t do it. The problem is you’re thinking. Keep going until you’re imagining, feeling, and seeing, it will be well worth it. It’s a wonderful feeling.
Hope this helps.
