If you could host a dinner and anyone you invite was sure to come, who would you invite?
This list could be endless and I only have a tiny dining room.
The obvious answer is to host it somewhere special, I’m torn between Buckingham Palace (I’d invite the King and Queen and that would probably be okay), and a beach on a beautiful summer evening. So not in the UK as we’re not entirely sure when summer is.
Hosting a dinner abroad would be tricky, especially as I have no contacts, so I’m thinking it has to be the Palace. This is handy as I want to gather some powerful people together, movers and shakers, people with knowledge.
I’d invite the King and Queen to any event as I admire them both so much, especially him for the role he created for a Prince of Wales. One of service not drinking and partying.
I admire her for her dedication to the man she loves, her willingness to be ripped apart mercilessly and stand by his side anyway. Her determination to move past everything and serve this country and the Commonwealth.
The reason I’m not inviting every famous person I admire is that I want to talk with people who could change this country for the better. The PM and other party leaders would have to be there, partners welcome of course.
I want to put every useful mind we have into the same room and just talk and listen. See what the best minds have to offer.
The strength of the King is that he not only has the most detailed knowledge of the UK of anyone alive, having literally spent his entire life on the streets with the people, asking questions, he has immense international experience. He has global context.
He also knows what works and what doesn’t. The monarch is not there to advise the government, they’re there as a safe space for a PM to talk. To be kept up to date with the workings of their country, or otherwise. But they can also tell you how every PM since Churchill handled various situations. That’s an immense amount of knowledge to place at the disposal of every Prime Minister.
I care about this country, and whilst it would be amazing to rub shoulders with my favourite stars, if I had this opportunity it would be country first, self second.
Mind you, Tom Cruise gets on with the Royals, Hugh Jackman could talk about the Antipodes, and Ryan Reynolds and his mate have to be there just for what they’ve done for Wrexham.
The England men’s team too. So proud of their stoicism and determination at the moment, but a lot of them also work hard in communities, raising money, encouraging the young, speaking out against knife crime etc., raising awareness, they’re good men. We rarely get reports of drunk driving and carousing now. We get a lot of reports of them out there using their positions to create change.
They also know a lot about the problems facing our youth.
So that’s my rather unexciting but hopefully effective dinner party.
Fabulous Happy Friday
