Live Long and Prosper

Write about your first crush.

My first crush was actually a man who worked for my uncle when I was a little girl. Knowing this, when they looked after me the day of my grandad’s funeral they let me ‘help’ him that day. My aunt and uncle were very kind people. Some of the best you could ever wish to meet.

My second crush was this man, I was 12 when Star Trek started, and I think Spock helped me deal with the emotional chaos of my life.

I discovered later that characters like him were popular because women wanted to be the ones who made them feel. I think I was a bit too young for that though.

The reboot

When the Chris Pine films came out I was a little worried about the actors who had to do justice to that top team. They were amazing.

Whilst bringing their own characters, they did full justice to the men and women who launched such a successful franchise.

Spock was a touch more tense with human weirdness in a way that added to his character, Kirk funnier but still a strong leader, Dr McCoy the best tribute I’ve ever seen down to nailing the voice, but a little more feisty. Uhura more a woman of modern times, but still faithful to the heart of the character. She had to move forward to be relevant today. As to Scotty! Much funnier and less dour but still perfect.

The films had more emotion too, which I loved. The third film didn’t get good press but I didn’t see why. It was genius for Kirk and Spock to both suffer a close personal loss, which bound them together tighter.

Still love it

What I love the most is the humanity of Star Trek. The Captain isn’t perfect, he needs his team. Their characters work well together in good times and bad. For me, Star Trek has always been about accepting difference and respecting it.

What a lovely tribute to George Takai that the updated Sulu was allowed to be gay. That’s the kind of heart that makes a reboot an improvement.

That humanity needs to permeate our lives. We need to move away from the conflict driven past to a world where difference is just natural.

Where we’re not scared because others aren’t like us in some way, where we can be different happily and respectfully.

Where everyone, everywhere, and every animal, insect, plant and tree, can

Live long and prosper

As all have a right to do.

Wonderful Wednesday

I'm a writer, public speaker, medium, and spiritual thinker. I suffered from acute anxiety from the age of 16 until I was well into my 50s, when I finally found methods that helped me to put it behind me. My struggles led to me exploring life through poetry, then plays, and over a 15 year period I made notes for a self help book which I published in 2015. Details on the book page. Although I am a psychic medium and loved the work, it didn’t feel right for me. It was an utter privilege, but my path was the exploration of what it means to be spirit in the real world and how we can make practical use of those abilities. Nowadays I write, blog, and teach soul-centred living, which is a gentle way of undoing past programming and connecting to your essential self, or soul. If you’re interested email me and we can chat. No pressure, it’s right for you or it’s not and you will know. The groups meet on line so no going out on cold, wet, winter’s evenings. On a personal note, I’m based in the UK. Married with five cats, no children, and four grandchildren, thanks to our inherited daughter, who has gifted us four beautiful little people that bring us such joy. Hope you enjoy the blogs. Deb xx
