Apparently I’ve answered all the available daily prompts? How on earth will I ever be able to write? So I’ll meander over what appears in my mind.
I’m currently coming to terms with the idea that I live in a country less popular than Israel, at least musically speaking.
Although Olly Alexander was cringe making. All that crotch grabbing, the song wasn’t great either, the staging was a deliberate showing off that took attention from the song, and not a word about peace at the end. It’s noticeable that those who did well seemed to actually care about others.
Personally France was my favourite. What a voice! But the winner Nemo was pure joy! Very talented.
However, for the UK to get zero points from the public vote was quite upsetting. Not sure the song deserved any points but there you go.
An isolationist little nation thinking we can go it alone in an interconnected world. In fairness to us we’re still part of Nato, pay our dues, and will always step up to support and defend our allies.
We’re also a nation where probably way over 50% of people now are pro Europe, as the younger generation come through and could now vote. I’d love to see what another vote would bring.
Were we younger we would move to Europe. We felt sick the morning after the vote. Like Lord Cameron we hoped the referendum would show that the country appreciated what we had in Europe, which was a great deal. Instead, by a margin small enough to really require a complete recount, we lost a great deal and cost ourselves and Europe an unnecessary fortune. All to fix what wasn’t broken.
We also lost what turned out to be an excellent Prime Minister and top team. As we have seen since.
All this reflecting has led to another realisation though. When you’re as good as Sam Ryder, as talented, compassionate, and caring, Europe will support you in spades!
Sam, you represent the best of us in so many ways.
And maybe Europe still knows how to love us, I hope so because millions of us certainly love you.
Here’s to next year. And here’s to feeling better about being British. We are in truth a mainly good nation whose people care a great deal about others. We have traditionally stepped up to help in all kinds of tragic situations, especially the public who have overwhelmed charities when needed.
