If you could make your pet understand one thing, what would it be?
I do believe that animals understand us better than we think, and they’re also capable of completely ignoring us.

Two-way comms
People will tell you that cats are not affectionate, they’re independent and don’t need us. That’s not true. We’ve had 12 who have connected strongly with us, sharing love, noticeably keeping us company if we’re upset.
They have all looked us in the eyes and communicated many things, both loving and ‘you’re kidding me’, and everything in between.
Particularly when I look at photos of my first boy he would look directly into the camera and I can look into his eyes and still feel him. It’s as if he consciously left a part of himself for me. He’s the only one who did that.

When we want to convey a message they’ve all been very good at picking it up. They know full well if they’ve been naughty. Hito is superb at letting us know when it’s food time (all the time), and Marcus is very clear about what he wants. He will look at a plate of food and sit back down if it’s not suitable.
I have hundreds of stories like that. All animal lovers do. But there’s one thing I wish I could communicate and know they understand…
How incredibly grateful I am for the love they bring into my life, and how very much they’re loved in return.
I think they know the second one though.

Lovely post! And I do agree that they love (deeply) in return.

Thank you. I don’t know where the rumour that they’re aloof came from. Probably humans who can’t love.
