I woke up to this beautifully sunny view this morning, yet logically I know it will be very cold out there, 66 winters have taught me that. So I know for a fact that appearances are deceptive in this case.
Somehow, knowing this, we will still look at a human and make immediate decisions about who they are. Seeing their behaviour and judging it, based on a life experience they don’t share.
Is the crabby person on the train recently bereaved? Is the aggressive person of colour exhausted by having something they can’t help used as an insult? Was the defensive, edgy, ‘hormonal’ woman raped recently? Has the menopausal woman been replaced by a new model?
Is the rude businessman facing redundancy at an age he won’t get another job, after a lifetime of dedication to work? Is the defensive gay person so experienced at having to unfairly defend who they are it’s become a habit?
Do politicians obfuscate because if they told us the truth we couldn’t handle it? Do they say what we want to hear to get our vote, because it’s the only way to get the opportunity to try to do something? Are we the problem in politics?
Would we be shocked at the reasons immigrants leave literally everything behind to escape the country of their birth?
Three thoughts we all know
- If you know for a fact that the weather can be deceptive you also know for a fact that things aren’t always as they appear.
- Humans react differently to the same things. The saying that we’re all unique is a fact.
- Beliefs and opinions are personal, knowing is based on knowledge. Ask don’t judge.
It’s a hard world out there. Let’s give each other a break.
Let’s be kind.
