Michael Neill is one of my favourite inspirers. You can find him on http://www.michaelneill.org. His strap line for his work is ‘might help can’t hurt’. It’s a wonderful attitude to have when you’re trying to help people. He’s always impressed me with his thinking, but this saying stopped me cold.
I’ve long said that all wars are started with a thought that becomes a sentence. When you stop and think about exactly how many people have died as a result of war since records began, it’s absolutely horrific. All because of a thought that became words.
Certainly words are being used in a way that could destroy our world right now.
My retro-wish
Is that in the past people could have been more aware of their thoughts and words, which led to actions and events. Yet it makes sense that centuries ago they wouldn’t even have thought of it. People were far less connected. Strangers could suddenly appear in your territory with different looks and hair colour, much bigger than your people, and there would have been no newspaper or news item to tell you that the Romans were about to invade. Of course the ancients were scared and unaware.
How can you explain it nowadays though? We have literally over 2000 years of documented history to prove to us how pointless war is, and yet we still go down the same road on an all too frequent basis. Just why?
Do what you can for you
From the world situation to the events in our lives, everything began with a thought. We sadly can’t change the world even though millions of us must agree on the futility of the world situation at the moment. However, we can be more aware of the nuclear power of our own thoughts and do something about that.
I’ve recently had a challenging time and had to get my mind back under control. Out of control it was a scary place, in fact I’d forgotten just how unpleasant it was. When I think that it was only about 10% of how I used to be, I view my past self with a great deal of self-respect and a lot of awe.
An out of control mind can make you feel physically sick and utterly terrified. Have you ever stopped to consider the sheer power of those thoughts that can make a healthy human feel so ill and frightened of something that isn’t happening? I hadn’t until I saw this saying today.
It’s certainly something to keep in mind, and speaking personally I’m never going to forget this.
