I was born at an iconic time. Elvis was in the building, Rock n Roll was growing, people were rocking round the clock in a life affirming way.
This was partly a reaction to a world event that no one could have imagined would happen twice; a world war. We were finally emerging from the past.
It was also a kind world. Much of the world was in total shock and that made them value what they had.
It was also historic
Sputnik 1, the first satellite, was launched.
The Cavern Club opened in Liverpool.
Elvis bought Graceland.
The Suez Canal reopened.
The first Hydrogen bomb was detonated in the Pacific, but thankfully failed to detonate. If only we’d got the hint.
Sir Stanley Mathews played his final football game.
John Lennon and Paul McCartney met for the first time.
I’m a Baby Boomer.
What’s really important
Is that I was born at a time of hope. I had a stuff free childhood where the smallest things and the smallest presents meant so much.
People wanted to be nice to each other, look after each other, and be good neighbours. We wouldn’t have needed a Covid lockdown then as people would automatically have considered each other.
We were free. We played simple games. A day in the park with a ball was the best thing ever. We would go out for hours on end and our parents never worried.
We had fresh air. We were naturally mentally healthy. Living a natural life where families communicated. I remember being part of a group of happy adults who loved one another.
That’s what I remember of the childhood launched in 1957. That’s what 1957 means to me. Innocence and hope.
