As with a lot of my older work I can see that this piece is relevant to people of all genders, and no matter the relationship. It could equally be parent child. I find it so interesting the different way we look at life such a few short years later, and it’s so much nicer to respect the variety of our human condition.
Do you love me?
Do you really love me?
Would you die for me?
Do you want no other woman but me?
When you look at me do you know
That I am the one and only forever woman?
Do you think I’m boring?
Does my conversation enthral you?
(You should be enthralled by me!)
Do I drive you crazy with my questions?
Do my feelings and interests interest you?
Or am I white noise?
When you look at me do you see
Something that keeps you faithful?
Do you worry that another man will want me?
Does your heart tremble at the thought
Of my limbs wrapped around a guilty pleasure?
Or would it be a secret relief?
Make me happy
Make me safe
Make me trust that my love is nestled in a secure place
That my heart does not have a target on it
Waiting for the arrow to pierce my belief in life
Make me know that this is true and real
If you don’t trust yourself and your own beauty
Why would you trust what I say?
Why would you believe that you are beautiful to me
When your reaction to your reflection is “ugh”?
Why would you, who sees yourself as unsightly
Believe that in my eyes you are beautiful
Why would you believe that in my heart you are mine?
You are my forever person.
What can I say that will pierce the armour of your self-disbelief?
I love you.
The rest is silence.
