Complex Question but Yes

Have you ever liked a villain more than the hero? Who and why?

What is a villain and what is a hero? We were watching Reacher last night, he killed any number of people, fighting as brutally as they attacked him. He incurred multiple, dangerous, stab wounds amongst a severe beating, and eventually killed his assailants. Good guy?

He was trying to prevent a deadly virus being set free in a night club so that the terrorists wanting to buy it and use it would not gain access. It was airborne. Bad guy?

Of course Reacher is the hero, any Lee Child fan will tell you that. He just knows he has to meet what’s coming the way it’s coming. No place for a decision based on world peace and kindness.

Often the hero has a side to him that is not very nice so that he can cope with the viciousness coming his way, as he risks everything doing the right thing. It’s almost a necessity.

Duality

There is no hero or villain. There are good and bad people. It’s too easy for humans to slip onto the dark side if they’ve had sufficient provocation and heartbreak. Just one assault on humanity too many.

We are more than a duality. We all encompass everything a human can manifest. It’s our choice where we land, but circumstances can make that fluid. Try to hurt our cats or our younger generation and we’ll do what we have to, and hate it. Good/bad/necessary?

Heroes and villains in entertainment illustrate and highlight that choice. Show us it isn’t an easy one.

Sometimes the good guy doesn’t do enough to prevent disaster. Bad guy?

For me, I’m more than likely to favour the actor I like in any film or tv series. I particularly love those times when both hero and villain are amazing actors and characters you can sympathise with equally.

If you’ve ever watched Person of Interest with Jim Caviezel and Michael Emerson (from Lost), available on most streaming services, you will see this played out in inspired detail. Cops working with questionable guys to do the right thing. A man who created something incredible but now questions the morality, a man trained to bypass morality. Both lead actors, and all the main supporting actors are pitch perfect.

The hero and villain can accidentally be the same person. Just a human doing their best with the hand life dealt them…
